Located at the gentle slopes of Pella, a region with many centuries of tradition in winemaking, where the ancient Greek poet Euripides wrote and staged his famous play Bacchae, Ligas Winery brings a fresh new approach to Greek viticulture and vinification, based in the principles of permaculture and organic farming. Having studied oenology in France, Thomas Ligas started his quest for a more natural style of wine in 1985, by looking at local ecosystems and searching for new ways to bring forward the qualities of this terroir. With a well thought out wine production process that respects the land with low interventions, preserves the natural characteristics of the grapes and brings out the best of local varieties Thomas, Meli and Jason Ligas create wines that are breaking new grounds and are part of exclusive wine lists in a number of countries around the world. The grape varieties that are grown to produce the domaine wines are Roditis, Assyrtiko, Kydonitsa for white, and Xinomavro, Limniona for red. All picking is done by hand from mid-August to late September. Red wines mature first in oak casks, then in bottles in the underground cellar.
