PDO Monemvassia-Malvasia received its PDO status only very recently in 2010 and is the newest Greek PDO zone. It includes the areas of southeastern Lakonia in the Peloponnese such as: Monemvassia, Asopos, Vies and Molai. With its main focus being to bring back to life the original historic, sweet “malvasios oenos” which came from Monemvassia, PDO Monemvassia concentrates on sweet desser wines. Oxidized aging of at least two years is one of the main requirements. If aging is decided to take longer periods of time, either 4 years or multiples of 4 are selected. The blending of different harvests is permitted if the most recent is clearly indicated on the bottle. Varieties used: Monemvassia (at least 51%), Assyrtiko, Asproudes, Kydonitsa.
