PDO Messenikola received its PDO status quite recently, in 1994. It is the smallest PDO zone at present and is located at the southwestern part of the district of Karditsa, at an altitude of750m, near wonderful Lake Plastira one of the most scenic lakes in Greece, which receives a great number of tourists, throughout the year. PDO Messenikola covers only 95 hectares of land and owes its name to Monsieur Nicola, someone who first planted the Messenikola variety in the area during Turkish Ottoman rule. PDO Messenikola and PDO Slopes of Meliton are the only two Greek PDO zones with wines whose composition includes international varieties.
