PDO Mavrodaphne of Cephalonia received its PDO status in 1971 and it is the only PDOwine from Cephalonia in which the famous, for its mythical Odyssey, neighboring island of Ithaki participates. Most of the vineyards of Mavrodaphne of Cephalonia are on the western part of the island, on the Paliki peninsula, while the rest is in Elios, some smaller areas in Argostoli, Livathou and Sami. The production of dessert wines from wineries outside the PDO Mavrodaphne of Cephalonia zone is permitted provided they are on the island. The clones of the Mavrodaphne variety cultivated in Cephalonia are different from those of Achaia.
