PDO Monemvassia-Malvasia is one of the newest PDO zones in Greece established in 2010. It is based in the region of Lakonia in Peloponnisos, at the most southern part of Greece’s mainland. Its original goal was to bring back to life the world famous historic “Malvasios Oenos” which came from the area of Monemvassia and later spread to the Cyclades islands and mainly to the island of Paros where today it is an important part of PDO Paros. All wines that bear the double name of «Monemvassia-Malvasia” are required to go through oxidized aging for at least 4 years or for multiples of 4. Mixing of wines from different harvests is permitted only if the most recent one is mentioned on the bottle. Wines are sweet ( Vin Liastos and Vin de Liquer) and contain at least 51% from the Monemvassia grape variety and the rest being Assyrtiko, Asproudes and Kydonitsa.
