AOP Samos received its PDO status in 1970. Samos is one of the Greek eastern Aegean islands famous for its long tradition of winemaking which goes back many centuries. With amazing vineyards at the northern part of the island, in the areas of Vathi and Karlovassi and in other smaller parts of this zone in the area of Pythagorio PDO Samos is a oenophiles dream. Muscat White is often referred to as Muscat Samos since the variety is closely associated with the island. Muscat White is also found in PDO Muscat of Cephalonia, PDO Muscat of Patras, PDO Muscat of Rio Patras and PDO Muscat of Rhodes. Muscat vineyards are planted at stone terraces throughout mount Karvounis Samos’s scenic mountain. Samos owes its success to the Union of Vinicultural Cooperatives of Samos who is the only producer on the island and who efficiently controls and manages local wine making. This cooperative has made the sweet wine of Samos world famous, while dessert wines under the geographical indication of “Samos” have also found their way into the international top of the top for excellent sweet wines.
