The area received its PDO status in 1971. PDO Rapsani is located in the district of Larissa, which is part of the region of Thessalia, extending from the northeastern side of the valley of Pinios river, to the towns of Rapsani and Pyrgetos at the lower part of mount Olympus (2,917m). The rest of PDO Rapsani lies on the southeastern side of the valley, in the area Ambelakia. Pinios river separates the southeastern slopes of Greece’s tallest mountain Olympos (1,978m) from the northeastern slopes of Mount Kissavos creating a beautiful green valley protected from winter winds. Rapsani vineyards are planted with all 3 of the indigenous varieties that are present in the region: Xinomavro, Krassato and Stavroto.
