Amyntaio received its PDO status in 1972. It is located at a mountainous plateau between the Vegoritis and Petres lakes not far from the northern borders of Greece with an altitude ranging between 570 and 750 meters. Covering an area of 550 hectares vineyards mainly produce Xinomavro, one of the top exporting Greek varieties. Wines that are recognized as PDO Amyntaio are red or rose, dry, semi-dry , semi-sweet, naturally sparkling rose, dry and semi-sweet.
